July 22, 2026 : Happy Pi Approximation Day!
It’s about time to celebrate Pi Approximation Day… sorry, I’ll show myself out.
In the meantime, did you know that while 22/7 is by far the most famous fractional approximation of Pi, it isn’t the best one? The fraction 355/113 (known as Milü) matches Pi to six decimal places, which is pretty incredible for such a simple fraction.
Milü was discovered by the Chinese mathematician Zu Chongzhi over 1,500 years ago, making it one of the greatest mathematical approximations of the ancient world. All this done before the advent of the iPad, something my kids have a hard time believing.
