November 26, 2025 : Zootopia 2 – Rounding Out the Trilogy of Questionably Produced Sequels
Zootopia 2 comes out this Holiday weekend, and I’m happy it looks to have a solid opening run at the box office. I really liked the first one and was surprised it took so long to make a sequel (9 years?!).
In fact, this is the third animated sequel in the past year to come out that seemed like an obvious greenlight but in fact took pretty long to do so. The other two being Moana and The Bad Guys – although the latter did only come out in 2022. Still, for Dreamworks, 3.5 years for a well deserved sequel feels longer than normal.
I’m not sure what the hold up was, particularly for Moana and Zootopia. Each of their first movies killed it financially (Zootopia raked in over a $1 billion!). Despite this success, there was little to no movement on a sequel for nearly a decade. These are both Disney properties, so maybe they were spending most of their time figuring out how to turn these into live action movies…
