I&#8217;ve always been a fan of the technique &#8211; not only because of its functionality of depicting motion blur in animation but because I always thought the artwork was really cool (and fun). It seems like there were more blogs in the past devoted to them, but I was still able to scrounge up some <a title=\"A solid breakdown, with great web design\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ceros.com\/inspire\/originals\/the-art-of-the-smear\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">cool<\/a> <a title=\"Nice history and some anime references\" href=\"https:\/\/canmom.art\/animation\/smears\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">articles<\/a> about them.<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.pivisuals.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Smear_Airbender.png\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-3365 size-medium\" title=\"Square in the nuts\" src=\"https:\/\/www.pivisuals.com\/wordpress\/wp-content\/uploads\/2024\/06\/Smear_Airbender-300x227.png\" alt=\"Smear frame from the Last Airbender\" width=\"225\" height=\"300\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>While used commonly in traditional animation, specifically with characters, it&#8217;s a technique that can be applied to motion graphics as well; and it doesn&#8217;t have to be done solely via hand drawn content.
