October 28, 2008 : Happy Diwali

Today, part of the world will observe The Fesitival of Lights – also known as Diwali.  It is celebrated by many Indian religions (Hindiusm and Jainism amongst to more popular ones).  Frankly, besides knowing a few people who celebrate this holiday, I am not all that familiar with the festival.

However, I did have the pleasure of reading the Mahabharata a while back.  This is a series of Hindu Epics, very similar in style to what one would read in Greek or Roman Mythology.  As one might expect, there are a lot of religious lessons included throughout the book; but ultimately it details a great story of good versus evil, and it is highly recommended.

As a side note, my personal favorite character is Arjuna.  The guy is just so Bad Ass (and in describing him, it warrants the capitalization).

Your connection to Indian culture is much stronger than this entry suggests: you’ve been celebrating The Festival of Spice since high school.
